Clinical Expertise
Dr. Georghiou provides comprehensive surgical care across the full spectrum of adult cardiothoracic surgery, with expertise in coronary artery bypass surgery, heart valve surgery, thoracic aortic surgery, minimally invasive cardiac surgery, and hybrid cardiovascular procedures. He has received advanced international training in Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) under Professor Alain Cribier in Rouen, France, followed by further training at the American University of Beirut Medical Center. He also completed the Heart Failure and Cardiomyopathies Preceptorship at the University Hospital Centre Zagreb, Croatia.
Academic Leadership
Dr. Georghiou is Associate Professor at the School of Medicine, European University Cyprus, and has served as Visiting Senior Lecturer at the Gray Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, Tel Aviv University, since 2007. He is also Deputy Director of the master’s Programme in Heart Failure and Cardiomyopathies at the School of Medicine, European University Cyprus.
He serves as Guest Editor for international Special Issues published in leading peer-reviewed journals:
- Journal of Clinical Medicine (JCM) – Clinical Progress in Cardiovascular Surgery.
- Journal of Personalized Medicine (JPM) – Precision Medicine in Cardiac and Vascular Surgery.

Dr. Georghiou is President of the Cardiac Surgery Working Group of the Cyprus Society of Cardiology, a member of the Cyprus National Bioethics Committee (2023–2027), and since 2025 has served on the Health Insurance Organization (HIO) Special Committee responsible for evaluating referrals of patients for treatment abroad. He has also contributed as a national expert to the adaptation of major European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS) clinical practice guidelines.
Research & International Recognition
His research focuses on cardiac surgery, cardio-oncology, postoperative atrial fibrillation, heart failure, precision medicine, and the application of artificial intelligence in cardiovascular medicine.
Dr. Georghiou has made significant contributions to cardiovascular prevention in Europe as lead author of the review "The European Union Must Act Effectively for a New Plan of Action to Improve the Cardiovascular Health Burden of European Citizens", proposing a comprehensive strategic framework to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease across Europe.
Dr. Georghiou is the author of 54 publications indexed in Scopus, including 41 articles published in PubMed-indexed peer-reviewed journals. His work has received more than 3,500 citations, with a Google Scholar h-index of 14, reflecting the sustained international impact of his research. His ORCID iD is 0009-0006-1667-3172.
